The role of the German immigrant played a special role in Milwaukee history. German Milwaukee sometimes referred to as the “German Athens” had a strong impact upon the industrial and political life of Milwaukee. Names such as Falk, Usinger, Berger, Anneke, Krug, Zeidler and others are visited on this tour.
Tour Guide: Paul Haubrich
Paul is past President of the Forest Home Historic Preservation Association and has served on the Forest Home Cemetery Board of Directors for nearly 20 years. He developed the initial tours at Forest Home Cemetery, starting in 2005, and has expanded the series to include a variety of diverse topics including Cemetery Art and Symbolism and the ever-popular Milwaukee History Tour.

This 1.5 hour walking tour travels down Old World Third Street and through downtown Milwaukee. Guests should wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk the entire length of the tour. Restrooms not available.
Walking down Old World Third Street today you are not likely to see many German shops advertising “English Spoken Here” as a special or unique service; but as early as 1848, Germans represented 1/3 of the entire population in Milwaukee and this section of the city was the life’s blood of German immigrants.
This tour showcases buildings that represent German-American business, education, faith, politics, entertainment, and publishing. Join our experienced tour guides and learn about Milwaukee’s most notable German biermeisters, tanners, artists, butchers, bakers, merchants, publishers, masons, architects and clergymen. This tour celebrates Milwaukee’s German heritage and recognizes the German community as having one of the greatest cultural impacts on our city.
Tour Guide: Bob Giese
Bob is a Milwaukee historian who has given tours in Milwaukee for many years. He has written extensively about Milwaukee, including the brewing families, in which most of them reside at Forest Home Cemetery. Bob recently hosted the sold out German Christmas Tour which ended at Milwaukee’s own German Christkindlmarkt in front of Fiserv Forum stadium.

Tour Guide: Mike Gehl
Mike Gehl is a retired business lawyer, who spent his entire 37- year career with Foley & Lardner, Milwaukee. In addition to golf, tennis. skiing and biking, Mike has spent his time in retirement tutoring 8th graders in the Milwaukee Public School system, guiding walking tours for Historic Milwaukee and teaching business law classes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School.
